My washing machine is making strange noises

Very noisy washing machine

All washing machines make a little noise, but we're not talking about the soothing hum of a wash cycle. No, it is a louder and irritating sound, which can have several causes. We have all heard abnormal noises coming from our washing machine. Squealing, banging, rubbing and rumbling are common noises. On the other hand, if your machine emits a noise other than these, it is preferable to have it checked by a professional. You can also try to resolve the problem yourself.

  • Check that the transport blocks have been removed
  • Check the stability of your washing machine and level it if necessary

1. Check that the transport chocks have been removed

Check that the shipping chocks have been removed from the back of the unit. Otherwise, remove them immediately and replace them with the covers supplied with your washing machine to fill the holes.

To keep your machine quiet, check that the feet are stable and tight and make sure they rest on a flat floor.

Make sure the device is parallel to the ground using a spirit level. If you find that this is not the case, adjust the feet accordingly and tighten them securely.

If possible, turn the machine back on to see if the problem has gone away.

Otherwise, continue with the troubleshooting procedure.

Leveling your device thanks to the adjustment of the feet.

Washing machine suddenly making abnormal noises during use

1. Unbalanced laundry load

If you hear banging and shaking, this is due to an unbalanced load of laundry.

Heavy laundry items can unbalance the washing machine.

Add a few towels to distribute the weight of the laundry in the drum.

Avoid overloading the drum.

2. Check the drum and clean the pump

If you hear clicking noises during a wash program, it may be due to objects in the drum or drain pump. Inspect the drum to make sure it does not contain any objects from your clothing, then do the same with the drain pump.

What to do if the washing machine leaks?

The presence of a puddle of water in a laundry room is almost always due to a leak from the washing machine. Sometimes it may be a minor malfunction that you can fix yourself, other times it may be a more serious problem. In both cases, it is important to find the cause of the problem and resolve it before it causes water damage.

  • Check the door and seal
  • Check detergent usage
  • Request the intervention of a technician

1. Check the door and seal

If the puddle is in the front, the leak may be coming from the door.

Always make sure the door is securely closed before starting a wash cycle.

You should normally hear a beep (click). Check that no clothing that could prevent the door from closing properly is stuck between the door and the machine and take care not to overload the washing machine drum.

Clean and check the seal

It is important to keep the rubber seal on your machine clean to prevent it from deteriorating, which can lead to leaks. Clean the seal and the door to remove lint and detergent residue from the contact area between the seal and the door. To clean the gasket on your washing machine, you need a cloth and warm water. There is no point in using abrasive cleaners. These attack the rubber. Rub the joint with a damp cloth until it is clean.

2. Check laundry detergent usage

The appliance may produce excessive suds if you wash lightly soiled laundry or curtains, add too much detergent, or use unsuitable or expired detergent.

Water and suds may overflow from the detergent drawer or leak out the door.

Here are the three main factors to consider when determining the amount of laundry detergent:

1. How dirty your clothes are

The dirtier your clothes are, the more detergent it will take to remove the dirt. You may not see it, but about 70% of the dirt on our clothes comes from the body: skin, sweat, grease and other bodily fluids. Only 30% of the dirt on our clothes comes from outside, including food, mud, grass, lotions, creams, etc.

2. The laundry load

It is no coincidence that the detergent dosage instructions depend on the size of the washing machine drum. The greater the load of laundry to be washed, the greater the quantity of dirt and therefore the more detergent will be required to remove it.

3. Find out about water hardness in your area

Hard water contains a high concentration of minerals, which must be softened and neutralized for best cleaning results. For this reason, detergent manufacturers advise using a little more detergent than normal in areas with hard water.
